China says guard duties along the country's border with North Korea and Burma have been transferred from the police to the military.
A foreign ministry spokesman says the People's Liberation Army took over the new responsibilities early this month.
The spokesman would not confirm recent media reports from Hong Kong that 150,000 Chinese troops were sent to the border area.
