Several U.S. Senators are urging President Bush to use his upcoming trip to Thailand to push for democratic reforms in Burma.
Republican Senator Mitch McConnel from the state of Kentucky says the United States and its allies, particularly Thailand, need to maintain pressure on Rangoon to secure the immediate release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her colleagues.
Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein of California says the current situation in Burma should be unacceptable not only to the Bush administration but to countries in the region, especially Thailand.
The United States and several other countries tightened sanctions on Burma after Aung San Suu Kyi was detained following a clash between her supporters and a pro-government mob in May.
