Thai Defense Minister Arrives In Burma - 2003-11-27

Thai Defense Minister Thamarak Isaranggura Na Ayutthaya has arrived in Burma with a high-level military delegation on a three-day visit.

The government in Bangkok says the purpose of the visit is to strengthen relations with the Burmese military and high-ranking government officials. Defense Minister Thamarak said earlier that he wanted frank talks with the Burmese.

He said the two sides planned to discuss how to bring a permanent peace to the border area between their two countries.

That area has been the scene of occasional clashes between Thai forces and Burmese troops pursuing rebel fighters. Drug trafficking along the border also has been a sore point between the two countries.

Relations between the two Southeast Asian neighbors have improved markedly since Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra made a visit to Rangoon earlier this year.
