The chairman of South Korea's Daewoo International Corporation, Lee Tae-Yong, has visited Rangoon to discuss the recent discovery of what appears to be a major natural-gas field off Burma's western coast.
The New Light of Myanmar newspaper says Mr. Lee met Prime Minister Khin Nyunt, Energy Minister Brigadier-General Lun Thi and other top officials Friday.
Mr. Lee says the find off the coast of Rakhine State is world class, and he estimates the field might yield 14-trillion cubic feet of gas. Daewoo International will apply for permits, he says, to explore and exploit other possible oil and gas deposits off Burma.
