U.S. military officials say an explosion near an ammunition dump in southern Afghanistan has killed seven U.S. soldiers and wounded three others.
U.S. Central Command said in a statement the soldiers were killed while working near an arms cache in the southern province of Ghazni Thursday afternoon. An Afghan interpreter was also injured in the blast and another American soldier is missing.
The wounded soldiers were evacuated to a hospital at Bagram air base near Kabul.
A military spokesman said the explosion is under investigation, and there was no immediate word on what caused the blast.
Last August, a similar munitions explosion in northern Afghanistan killed 13 Afghan militiamen and wounded 21.
