Review On A Videotaped Account Of A Depaeyin Eye-witness - 2004-02-09

Daw Nyunt Nyunt, an NLD party member of Mandalay who was travelling in Aung San Suu Kyi's convoy on May 30, 2003, gave an eye-witness account of what is known as Depayin incident in which supporters of the military government attacked the supporters of the National League for Democracy.

In a vivid videotaped account, Daw Nyunt Nyunt said she was severely beaten and injured badly. Just before being taken away from the scene by some villagers, she said she saw the attack from the beginning to the end. She said, as a result of this attack, she saw several human bodies scattered all over.

She said that the attackers came in big vans with big glass windows and that there were bright lights beaming down from the nearby trees. She said that three persons beat her up so bad that she went unconscious.

But one attacker told her that the government was building bridges and roads for the country and asked her what Aung San Suu Kyi had done for them. She said Aung San Suu Kyi escaped from being attacked because the car she was in overtook hers just before the attack and left the scene because it was getting dark.

However, the Burmese Government said the violence was a clash between supporters and protesters of Aung San Suu Kyi. It also announced that four people died and 50 were injured. No official investigation of this ugly incident has been carried out so far.
