A leading US Congressman has criticized Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra for his support of Burma's military government, and for his country's deportation of Burmese refugees.
Speaking at the U.S. Senate Tuesday, (Kentucky) Senator Mitch McConnell said Mr. Thaksin's friendly relations with Rangoon may be tied to his ownership in Shin Corporation. The holding company was founded by Mr. Thaksin, and is alleged to have investments in Burma.
Mr. McConnell also expressed concern over reports that Thailand was deporting thousands of Burmese refugees, exiles, and migrant workers back to their home country every month.
