President Bush has praised Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi for her efforts to promote human rights and democracy.
In a statement Monday marking International Women's Day, Mr. Bush said the best guarantor of the rights of women is freedom and democracy.
Burma's military government arrested Aung San Suu Kyi after a clash between opposition supporters and a pro-government mob in northern Burma last May.
Aung San Suu Kyi was detained in a secret location until she went to a hospital for surgery in September. She then was allowed to go home, where she remains under virtual house arrest.
