Burmese PM To Discuss Trade And Economic Cooperation With Bangladesh - 2004-04-03

Burma's Prime Minister Khin Nyunt is expected to discuss ways to increase trade and economic cooperation during a three-day visit to Bangladesh beginning Sunday.

The visit will be the first to Bangladesh for the Burmese leader since he became prime minister in August. He is to meet Sunday with Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

A statement from the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry said that among the topics to be discussed are plans for a road link between the two neighboring countries which share a 260-kilometer border. The proposed road would link Bangladesh's southern town of Guandung with Burma's Sittwe town.

Relations between the two countries were strained during the early 1990s following an influx of Muslim refugees to escape religious persecution by Burma's ruling military junta. Most of the refugees have returned to Burma under a United Nations repatriation program.
