Bush, Chirac Meet in Paris - 2004-06-06

President Bush and French President Jacques Chirac have met in Paris for talks on Iraq and other international issues.

The two men said they reviewed cooperation on a variety of issues including the struggle against terrorism, the situation in Africa, efforts for peace in the Middle East and movement toward a new United Nations Security Council resolution on Iraq.

Mr. Chirac noted the recent differences between the two countries on Iraq but their agreement on the need for peace in the area. He said both sides have moved forward positively and should reach agreement soon on the U.N. resolution.

Earlier, in Rome, Mr. Bush appealed to a new generation of Europeans and Americans to pull together to help democracy take root in Iraq. Speaking after talks with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, a strong supporter of U.S. policy in Iraq, the president called the war against terror "the challenge of our time."

Meanwhile, several thousand opponents of the war in Iraq gathered in Paris for a demonstration. They carried anti-war banners, including one that described Mr. Bush as a number-one terrorist.

The president is on a three-day visit to Europe marking decisive events 60 years ago during World War Two, including the D-Day invasion by Allied forces and the liberation of Rome.
