Burmese Monks Received Harsh Jail Terms For Boycotting Lunch - 2004-06-28


20 young monks were arrested in Rangoon last November and sentenced to 7 years jail term each for refusing to eat lunch offered by the senior Burmese military officers.

Ashin Kemasara, President of the Thai-based Burma Young Monks Associaiton said, "These monks did the right thing."

Ashin Aik-ti-ma of New York citing Lord Budhha's teachings said monks have the right to refuse anything offered by who they considered to be sinners.

Professor Dr. Aye Kyaw of New York said monks had opposed Burmese kings and British colonial rulers by peaceful means.
