Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has criticized U.S. policy in the Middle East, saying there should be no unilateralism in international affairs.
Speaking before Association of Southeast Asian Nations foreign ministers in Jakarta, Ms. Megawati said unilateralism has pushed aside what she called the "democratic ways" of resolving disputes.
Ms. Megawati also called on the region to cooperate against terrorism, piracy, and people smuggling.
ASEAN ministers meeting in Jakarta may also debate a draft statement on Burma to release pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.
ASEAN members include Indonesia, Burma, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Brunei.
