Indonesia's Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda says his Burmese counterpart has promised that detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will be allowed to participate in future elections.
Mr. Wirayuda spoke to reporters Wednesday on the sidelines of the ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Jakarta. He said Burmese Foreign Minister Win Aung made the pledge during a closed door meeting with his Southeast Asian counterparts.
Military-ruled Burma is holding a national convention to draft a new constitution, but Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy party has chosen not to participate. She has been in detention for more than a year.
Mr. Wirayuda said the Burmese official pledged that once the constitution is set, the pro-democracy leader can participate in elections.
