U.S. military officials in Iraq say troops searching for illegal weapons have discovered a car-bomb "factory" in southern Baghdad.
More than 50 people were taken into custody at the bomb workshop, U.S. officials say, and soldiers recovered four vehicles that were being converted to deliver and detonate explosives.
Military spokesmen say a two-day search by American forces also turned up caches of rocket-propelled grenade launchers and military hardware at other locations, where nearly 50 other suspects were detained.
The Army says the detainees are believed to include members of an insurgent cell responsible for producing roadside bombs that killed at least two U.S. soldiers.
More than 20 car bombs were detonated in Iraq last month before the former U.S.-led coalition authority transferred sovereignty to an interim Iraqi government.
