Burma to Get $3.1 Million in Environment Aid From Japan - 2004-07-19

Burma says it is getting a $3.1 million grant from Japan to repair its environment programs.

A report in Rangoon today (Monday) (in the Myanmar Times) says the Japanese aid will be used to combat widespread erosion caused by deforestation and drought in central Burma.

Japan, which is Burma's largest creditor and aid donor, had threatened to suspend assistance last year unless the military government (in Rangoon) released pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi -- who remains under house arrest.

Information for this report is provided by AFP.
