Arafat Fires Cousin as Gaza Security Chief - 2004-07-19

Palestinian officials say Yasser Arafat has fired his cousin as head of security in the Gaza Strip, and asked the man he dismissed from the post last week to return to his job.

Saturday's appointment of Yasser Arafat's cousin (Musa Arafat) sparked two days of violent protests against the Palestinian Authority.

Today (Monday), President Arafat asked Brigadier General Abdel Razek Majaide to resume the job he left last week.

In other developments, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia convened an emergency cabinet meeting in the West Bank today to discuss widening disputes among Palestinian factions.

Mr. Qureia submitted his resignation Saturday, saying Gaza is in a "state of chaos." Mr. Arafat rejected the resignation, but today the prime minister said his resignation still stands.
