A huge fire has swept through a crowded supermarket on the outskirts of Paraguay's capital, Asuncion, leaving at least 215 people dead and dozens more injured.
The blaze broke out Sunday at the Ycua Bolanos supermarket while it was full of midday shoppers. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but Reuters news agency says it appears to have started from a gas explosion.
Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte rushed to the scene, while Interior Minister Orlando Fiorotto ordered off-duty police and firefighters there as well. Mr. Fiorotto also asked that hospitals prepare to admit the injured.
Badly burned bodies were seen being taken away from the smoking debris. Relatives of the victims also crowded near the scene and cried as bodies were pulled from the wreckage.
