India Uses Army to Rescue Flood Victims - 2004-08-04

The Indian army is rescuing people still stranded by the worst flooding to hit South Asia in years.

Troops were deployed in the hardest hit regions of the country in the west and north and are also distributing aid. This year's floods in India, Bangladesh and Nepal have so far killed at least 1,600 people.

In Bangladesh, relief workers say thousands more could still die from water-borne disease from contaminated drinking water. Bangladesh says it needs food aid for 20 million people over the next five months to make up for lost crops.
