Thai police say a local official and her husband have been arrested on charges that they illegally smuggled Burmese workers into Thailand.
Authorities say Khomkhai Boonsitakul and her husband were taken into custody this week in the Mae Sot district of western Tak province.
Police say they found evidence at the woman's home suggesting that the couple ran a human smuggling operation and job placement service for Burmese workers.
Thailand launched a campaign against human trafficking earlier this month, threatening to arrest and deport any illegal migrant worker in the country.
Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers, primarily from Burma, Cambodia and Laos, have registered with Thai authorities to avoid deportation.
