Typhoon Aere has struck eastern China, bringing heavy rains and leading to the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people.
China says Aere came ashore in Fujian province, south of Shanghai, late Wednesday. Chinese state-run media report some parts of the province received more than 10 centimeters of rain.
It is not clear if there are any casualties. China says more than 500,000 people were evacuated from low-lying and coastal areas, while more than 40,000 fishing boats were called back to port.
The storm had wind gusts of up to 175 kilometers an hour when it hit the Chinese mainland. Earlier the storm lashed parts of the Philippines and Taiwan.
