Thai Foreign Minister Surakiart Sathirathai is a candidate to become the next United Nations Secretary-General.
Thai diplomats are lobbying for Mr. Surakiart to become the first Asian head of the world body in more than 30 years.
Current U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's term ends in 2006, and it is widely believed an Asian will be tapped as his replacement. The job is traditionally rotated between regions every 10 years.
The last Asian Secretary-General, Burma's U Thant, left the post in 1971.
