China's ruling Communist party has issued a major policy paper, warning leaders that their performance is crucial to the survival of the party.
The 36-page document released Sunday reflected the leadership's fear that rising anger at rampant corruption could undermine public acceptance of communist rule.
The official Xinhua news agency says the policy statement called on party members to develop a "stronger sense of crisis about reform," warning that communist rule "will not remain forever if the party does nothing to safeguard it."
Xinhua says the statement also warned that China's reform and development has reached a critical stage and that "hostile forces are still pursuing their strategic attempts to westernize and separate the country."
