The United States has called on Burma's military government to allow the United Nations special envoy to Burma to return to the country as soon as possible.
U.S. State Department spokesman Adam Ereli said Malaysian diplomat Razali Ismail should be allowed to visit Burma as much as he deems necessary.
The United Nations says the Mr. Razali has been prevented from visiting Burma since March.
Mr. Ereli also welcomed last week's meeting on Burma convened by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. He said Washington hopes Mr. Annan will remain focused on Burma and generate more international cooperation on the issue.
Mr. Ereli reiterated U.S. demands that Burma must respect its people's desire for a national reconciliation and the establishment of democracy in the country.
