Burmese Rebel Negotiators Leave Rangoon After Talks Cut Short - 2004-10-21

Negotiators from a Burmese rebel group have left Rangoon after talks with Burma's military government were cut short due to the ouster of the country's prime minister.

A spokesman for the Karen National Union says the rebel delegation left Rangoon Wednesday for the capital of Burma's Karen state.

The delegates were in Rangoon for a new round of peace talks. The Karen National Union, which has been fighting for autonomy in eastern Burma for decades, is the only major ethnic rebel group that has not signed a formal ceasefire with the Burmese government.
