President Bush is urging U.S. allies and Americans of both major parties to unite in the U.S.-led war on terror.
Holding his first news conference since he won re-election on Tuesday, Mr. Bush said every American and every civilized country has a stake in the war's outcome.
The president said he will reach out to the European Union and NATO in hopes of encouraging freedom and democracy as an alternative to tyranny and terror.
His comments come after a heated U.S. presidential campaign in which Mr. Bush and challenger John Kerry traded harsh criticism about how to deal with Iraq and the threat of terrorism.
Mr. Bush also said he expects changes in his cabinet but has not made any decisions.
U.S. media reports today (Thursday) say Attorney General John Ashcroft is likely to resign in the near future.
The 62-year-old Mr. Ashcroft has suffered from health problems that resulted in the removal of his gall bladder earlier this year.
