Thai Ex-Policeman, Burmese Migrant Worker Shot Dead in Southern Thailand - 2004-11-15

Officials say a former policeman and a Burmese migrant worker have been shot dead in violence-torn southern Thailand.

Police said Aroon Pongchangkid was found shot to death in his home at a rubber plantation in Krong Penang district, while a Burmese man was found outside the home with wounds from the same weapon or a similar one.

The incident came at the beginning of the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr, which ends the religious fasting month of Ramadan. Police said the noise of the shooting was obscured by the sound of celebratory fireworks.

The motive for the two shootings was not immediately clear. Muslim majority southern Thailand has been the scene of continuing violence.
