The United Nations special envoy to Burma has met with Burma's foreign minister in hopes of returning to Burma to encourage its stalled transition to democracy.
Razali Ismail met Sunday with Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win in Laos on the sidelines of ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Earlier in the day he met with Thailand's foreign minister Surakiart Sathirathai.
A senior Thai official told the Associated Press Mr. Razali is trying to figure out how to approach Burma's new leadership. Former Prime Minister Khin Nyunt was sacked in September.
Also Sunday, members of the newly formed ASEAN Inter-parliamentary caucus on Burma issued a nonbinding statement saying Burma should be suspended from ASEAN if it does not restart its progress toward democracy. More than 40 lawmakers from ASEAN countries participated.
