Australian Senate Demands UN Action on Burma - 2004-12-02

Australia's Senate has approved a motion calling on Canberra to support a call for a United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the Burmese problem.

The motion, approved Thursday, asks Australian Prime Minister John Howard's government to urge Burma's military government to fully engage with U.N. officials on finding a political solution in Burma.

The motion also called on Canberra to repeat its demand that Rangoon free opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest, as well as all remaining political prisoners from custody.

Mr. Howard has said he should instruct Australia's U.N. delegate to ask the Security Council to make the Burmese situation a top priority.
