The city of Paris has formally awarded Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi honorary citizenship of the French capital.
A senior Burmese exile leader, Sein Win, accepted the award Friday on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been under house arrest for more than a year.
Sein Win criticized Burma's military government for saying it is detaining Aung San Suu Kyi for being a threat to national security. He said the Nobel laureate believes that a non-violent struggle is the only way to bring peaceful change to Burma.
Sein Win also called on the international community to continue its moral and political support for democratic change in Burma.
