The archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa, Desmond Tutu, has written a letter to Austrian Airlines urging the carrier to stop flights to Burma.
Archbishop Tutu appealed to the company to stop giving tacit support to the military regime by continuing to ferry tourists to the country.
He also expressed concern for his fellow Nobel peace laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest in Burma.
The archbishop reminded the airline's management that international sanctions aimed at bringing pressure on the South African government had contributed significantly to bringing apartheid to an end.
