The death toll from Sunday's tsunami has dramatically increased in the last day, but there has been little news about the extent of the disaster in Burma.
Burmese officials have said that large waves hit coastal regions on Sunday, killing 36 people and destroying 17 villages. The United Nations said at least 90 people were killed. But the estimated tolls were far lower than those in nearby countries.
There are dozens of inhabited Burmese islands in the Indian Ocean, some of which are just a few hundred kilometers from islands that were devastated in Sunday's tsunami.
Burma's military government has so far refused offers of humanitarian assistance. The tightly-controlled government rarely provides details of man-made or natural disasters.
