Fourth Journalist Reported Released in Burma - 2005-01-05

An international media rights group says Burmese authorities have released a fourth journalist who had been jailed for allegedly threatening state security.

The group Reporters Without Borders says (Tuesday) 60-year-old Ohn Kyaing, a member of the opposition National League for Democracy, was released Monday from a prison near Rangoon.

He was arrested in 1990 by agents of the Military Intelligence Service and sentenced to 17 years in prison for anti-government writings.

Ohn Kyaing was among 5,588 prisoners released by the military government to mark Tuesday's anniversary of Burma's 1948 independence from Britain. Three other journalists and several NLD members were among those freed.

Burma has released nearly 20,000 prisoners since early November. The government said those released earlier were arrested without sufficient cause by the country's now-defunct National Intelligence Bureau.
