Burma Expected to Try Former Military Intelligence Officers Soon - 2005-01-18

Foreign news agencies say several members of Burma's disbanded military intelligence force will soon be tried in civilian courts.

The Associated Press and Japan's Kyodo news agency quote Burmese police sources as saying the intelligence officers face a number of charges including corruption and illegal economic activity.

The Associated Press says the charges were filed earlier this month but trial dates have not been set.

The officers are thought to be held at Insein prison near the Burmese capital, Rangoon. They were detained after last October's ouster of prime minister and military intelligence chief Khin Nyunt.

Since then, the government has released thousands of prison inmates it says were wrongly charged by the intelligence force Khin Nyunt headed.
