A Philippine lawmaker says she will urge the government to pressure Burma to free pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago announced Tuesday she will file a resolution urging Burma's military rulers to release the head of the opposition National League for Democracy, as well as other political prisoners.
Miss Santiago says if Burma continues to detain Aung San Suu Kyi, the Philippines should oppose Burma's chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2006.
Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for more than a year. The Nobel laureate was arrested in May, 2003, after a clash between her supporters and a pro-government mob.
