A leading member of Burma's military government is warning against efforts to block the creation of a new constitution for the country.
The junta's Secretary-one, Lieutenant General Thein Sein, told a war veterans group Tuesday that both internal and external forces are trying to disrupt the constitution-drafting convention scheduled to resume in a few weeks.
The general's remarks were reported Wednesday in state-run media. He called the convention crucial to the development of a modern Burmese state.
Earlier this month Burma's opposition National League for Democracy said it is willing to take part in the conference if the military ends the house arrest of NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The NLD has boycotted previous sessions of the conference.
