Thai PM Says Tensions Rising in Burma - 2005-01-28

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says political tension in military-ruled Burma has risen after the death of a senior general's aide.

Speaking to reporters Friday in Bangkok, Mr. Thaksin said there is tension and conflict in Burma, but it has not risen to the level of a coup. He added that Thailand is keeping a close eye on the situation.

Mr. Thaksin's remarks came a week after the death of Lieutenant Colonel Bo Win Tun, the personal assistant to Burma's second in command, General Maung Aye.

Bo Win Tun's obituary ran in state media Sunday, but it was unclear how he died.

Rumors have swirled that he may have killed himself or died in a shootout, sparking talk of a power struggle.

Information for this report is provided by AP and AFP.
