16 Mar 05: Asian Stock Prices Close Mostly Higher

Asian stock markets closed mostly higher Wednesday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index gained 52 points to finish at 11,873. The average lost 29 points on Tuesday.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 16 points to end at 13,833.

The Hang Seng fell 90 points on Tuesday. In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times index rose six points to close at 2,170.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bangkok, Jakarta, Sydney and Taipei. Markets were lower in Bombay, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Shanghai and Wellington.

Shares in Seoul were unchanged. In late afternoon Tokyo currency trading, the dollar was selling at 104.28 yen, down 0.70 yen from the same time Tuesday.

In Hong Kong, the price of gold rose one dollar to close at 442 dollars, five cents an ounce.
