UN Commission Opens Talks On Racism And Xenophobia

The UN Human Rights Commission discussed racism and xenophobia Monday, as the body marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

An expert on the issue warned the commission about racist and xenophobic language becoming more mainstream, and about the rise of Christianophobia, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia.

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan Monday likened racism to a virus, which he said comes in the form of racist violence, hate crime, persecution, and institutional discrimination.

On Friday, U.S. officials announced plans to sponsor a resolution on Cuba and co-sponsor ones on North Korea and Burma before the Human Rights Commission, which opened its annual talks in Geneva (Switzerland) last week.

But U.S. officials said they will not introduce a resolution on China, citing actions that country is taking to improve its human rights record
