US Rights Official: Burmese Rights Deteriorated In Past Year

The head of the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights says Burma's already poor human rights record has deteriorated even further in the past year.

Speaking in Geneva to UNHCR members, former U.S. Senator Rudy Boschwitz says more than 1,000 political prisoners remain in Burmese jails. He also noted officials have extended the house arrest of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr. Boschwitz says the United States remains deeply troubled by the Burmese military's abuse, rape and torture of ethnic minorities.

He says the United States will continue to support independent investigations of Burma's human rights violations.
