Desperate Search for Survivors from Indonesian Quake

People on the northern Indonesian island of Nias are mounting a desperate search for more survivors in the rubble left behind by Monday's 8.7 magnitude earthquake.

Local residents and rescue crews are using shovels, crowbars and their bare hands to dig through the debris.

There is a shortage of food, water and other supplies on Nias. Emergency aid has been arriving, but damage to the island's airport has made it impossible for large aircraft to deliver supplies.

There are reports of at least one looting incident on the island. Australia, Japan and Singapore are sending military aircraft to Nias Wednesday filled with relief supplies, equipment and personnel.

Officials estimate the death toll from the earthquake could be as high as 1,000. There are also unconfirmed reports that as many as 300 people were killed on the remote island of Banyak.
