The United Nations' labor agency has called on Thailand to protect foreign workers from abusive employers.
The appeal by the International Labor Organization (ILO) Thursday was made after a teenage maid from Burma was allegedly beaten by her Thai employer. The I.L.O. also demanded that Thai officials take legal action against those responsible for the attack.
The 17-year-old ethnic Karen girl was beaten so severely she had to be hospitalized for two months. The young girl's employer, a 32-year-old Thai woman, was charged in connection with the assault, but denied involvement and was released on bail.
The U.N. labor agency says Thailand has ratified I.L.O. conventions to protect children from abuse.
