Japanese financial markets were closed for a national holiday. Trading in Tokyo will resume on Friday.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 51 points to finish at 13,945. The average lost 15 points on Tuesday.
In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times index rose 12 points to close at 2,149.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bangkok, Bombay, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila and Seoul. Markets were lower in Sydney, Taipei and Wellington.
In Hong Kong, the price of gold rose 10 cents to close at 429 dollars, 15 cents an ounce.
