Burma to Hold Special Gem Auction

Burma will hold a special gem auction next month aimed at reducing illegal exports and earning much-needed foreign currency.

A state-run newspaper - Myanma Ahlin said today that the sale, organized by the Mines Ministry from June 28th to July fifth at the Gems Center in Rangoon, is also aimed at developing the country's gem market.

No details were available about the auction, announced just one month after the military government held another auction attended by nearly 900 merchants from 15 countries.

The junta normally holds the auctions twice a year in a bid to curb the smuggling of jade and precious stones out of the country.
