US Criticizes Burma For Suppressing Democracy

The United States says Burma's military government continues to ignore international requests to investigate an attack on pro-democracy activists and the seizure of leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The State Department noted that May 30th marks the two-year anniversary of the attack. In a statement, it says Burma's government refuses to take any responsibility or hold accountable those responsible for the incident, and notes that Aung San Suu Kyi, who was detained after the incident, is still under house arrest.

The statement also says democracy supporters are still being arrested, and citizens in general suffer serious abuses at the hands of the government.

It calls on Burma to release all its political prisoners and respect the fundamental human rights of the Burmese people.
