ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Burma Caucus Meets in Singapore

Legislators from ASEAN countries have discussed ways to pressure Burma's military regime to implement democratic reforms.

During a meeting in Singapore -Thursday, the Caucus on Burma legislators also discussed Burma's scheduled chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2006. They said they want Burma to follow through with reforms before taking chairmanship.

The caucus includes members of parliament from at least five ASEAN countries. It says ASEAN governments should be more candid and forceful with Burma's military regime so it will carry out promises of more democracy.

The role of the caucus is to educate ASEAN about what is going on in Burma and what needs to be done to bring about democratic change in the country.
