02 August 05: Asian Stock Prices Close Mostly Higher

Asian stock markets closed mostly higher Tuesday.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost seven points to finish at 11,940. On Monday the index gained 47 points.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained more than one percent (158 points) to end at 15,137 -- a four-and-a-half year high. The Hang Seng gained 47 points on Monday.

In the region's other big market, Singapore, the Straits Times index rose 11 points to close at a new five-and-a-half-year high of 2,377.

Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Bangkok, Bombay, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney and Taipei.

The market was lower in Wellington. In late afternoon Tokyo currency trading, the dollar was selling at 111.39 yen, down 0.89 yen from the same time Monday.

In Hong Kong, the price of gold rose 40 cents to close at $432.15 cents an ounce.
