Activists Urge Continued Pressure on Burma

Some human rights activists are urging the Associations of Southeast Asian Nations to keep up the pressure on military-ruled Burma.

The Alternative ASEAN Network on Burma said Monday that last month's effort to persuade Burma's rulers to give up a chance to chair ASEAN shows that pressure tactics can work.

Debbie Stothard of the Alternative ASEAN Network on Burma says the successful effort to apply international pressure boosted ASEAN's integrity.

Her group made their point in a press release sent out to coincide with the 17th anniversary of a doomed pro-democracy uprising in Burma.
