UN Diplomat Meets Burma's Top General

  • VOA News

An envoy to U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has met with Burma's leader, but talks did not touch on democratic reform or the release of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest.

Former Indonesian Foreign Minister Ali Alatas says he and Senior General Than Shwe met for more than an hour Friday and discussed only proposed reforms at the United nations.

Mr. Alatas said he traveled to Burma as special envoy of Mr. Annan for the purpose of U.N. reform, and not to deal with the situation in Burma.

The U.N. diplomat is not scheduled to meet members of the opposition National League for Democracy during his three-day visit, which ends Saturday.
