Burma Rejects Tutu, Havel Rights Report

  • VOA News

Burma has rejected a report calling for the U.N. Security Council to take action over the junta's human rights record.

In a statement Friday, Burma's foreign ministry says the report portrays the country in the most negative light. The statement says there is no basis whatsoever to the claims in the report.

The 70-page report, issued by former Czech President Vaclav Havel and retired South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu -- a Nobel Peace laureate -- urges the Security Council to take up an urgent initiative to bring reforms to Burma.

The report says conditions are far worse in Burma than they were in such countries as Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Haiti before U.N. intervention.
