Burma Reports on Drug Arrests

Burma's state media say the military-ruled country detained 4,754 people last year in connection with drug-related cases, including opium production.

The New Light of Myanmar newspaper said today-Saturday that nearly 20% of those taken into detention were women.

Burma is among the world's largest producers and traffickers of amphetamine-type stimulants. The newspaper says the government seized several million stimulant tablets last year.

The ruling junta has said it plans to wipe out production of opium poppies by 2014.
